Negative Impacts of Hydroelectricity
- Dams are expensive to build, and have very high standards while building them.
- There have been past accidents where dams have flooded and caused severe damages to towns and villages around it.
- Dams can disrupt the natural hydrological cycle by controlling the input and output of a river. Eg. Egypt's water table rising because of dams, this can cause the destruction of ancient artifacts.
- The building of large dams can force families to move and relocate.
- The dam may increase the likelihood for the area to flood and the construction of it will destroy ecosystems.
- Building dams are time consuming and require more maintenance work and specially trained workers.
- Cannot be built without large bodies of water, might be inaccessible to many countries.
